How to Become a Minimalist
Everyone dreams of that clutter free and chaos free home. Minimalism is something that has been trending over the years and for good reason. It provides you with a much simpler lifestyle that is more focused on people and experiences rather than material possessions.
You may think this lifestyle is totally unattainable. However, with a few simple steps, you can be on track towards minimalism faster than you think. Here are some steps we have found will best equip you to become a minimalist.
Organize
The first step to becoming a minimalist is organizing what you already have. This is crucial so that you can see what all you are working with. Focus on one room in your house at a time. Make sure you really clean and put away everything into its own space. If you find things that don’t have a set space in your home, it might be time to pitch it.
Get Rid of Things you Don’t Use
The next step that you need to take is really diving deep into everything in the room that you organized. You are going to take time to think if that object makes your life better. Would you be okay if you gave that away or sold that item? If so, make a pile of those things and either donate or sell them. This might be a way to make a little extra cash as well, which everyone loves.
Quality over Quantity
After you have gone through all of your things and discarded what you don’t need or use any more, you need to make a game plan for future purchases. Going forward, when you are shopping, make sure you are looking for items that not only bring you joy, but that you are also purchasing items that will last for a while. This is one of the most important things in becoming a minimalist. You don’t want to have to keep repurchasing items. If you purchase one item that you know will last forever, this will eliminate a lot of other unnecessary purchases. This will also save you time and money in the long run.
Experiences over Material Items
One common trait that a lot of minimalists have is that they tend to spend their money on experiences over material items. They tend to value time spent doing things, since they are trying to eliminate physical objects. This is a good habit to adopt since you can spend more time with people that you love rather than spending that money on useless things.
Buy Reusable Items
Buying items that you know you will be able to use again is another great way to minimalize your items. Minimalists pride themselves on never purchasing things that they know they are only going to use once. If there is something that you know you are only going to use once or a couple times, try borrowing that item or renting it instead.
One example of something you can purchase is plastic bags. Rather than purchasing a pack of 100 or more, try purchasing a few reusable ones instead. You will find that you save a lot of money and are actually helping the environment too.
